Historically, Bentota was an important anchoring point during the Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial eras due to its strategic location between Colombo and the southern provinces. The name "Bentota" itself is believed to be derived from "Ben", a demon who ruled the riverbank (tota means ferry or river port in Sinhala), according to local legend.

During the Dutch colonial period, Bentota became known for its coconut plantations and spice trading. You can still see traces of colonial architecture and old trading houses tucked behind coconut palms and garden walls. Under British rule, the town flourished as a leisure retreat for colonial officers and aristocrats, with luxurious resorts and landscaped estates like the famous Lunuganga Estate, designed by iconic architect Geoffrey Bawa, reshaping the town into an artistic and architectural marvel.

Today, Bentota continues to embrace its colonial past while emerging as a peaceful resort destination famous for Ayurveda wellness centers, water sports, river safaris, and scenic gardens.
