Hikkaduwa, nestled along the southern coastline of Sri Lanka, is one of the country’s most iconic beach destinations. Known today for its surf waves, vibrant nightlife, and coral-rich waters, Hikkaduwa has a fascinating past that adds depth to its natural charm.

The name "Hikkaduwa" is believed to come from the words “Sip Kaduwa,” meaning “sword of knowledge,” hinting at its ancient Buddhist roots. Historically, this area was part of trade routes used by Arab and Asian merchants, and it has long been a center of fishing, cinnamon cultivation, and spirituality.

In the 1960s and ’70s, Hikkaduwa transformed into a popular destination among backpackers and surfers from Europe, drawn by its laid-back atmosphere and incredible reef breaks. Over the years, Hikkaduwa has grown into a thriving tourist town—yet it still retains the charm of a friendly local village where temples, fishing boats, and wildlife remain part of daily life.

The area also holds memories of resilience. It was one of the towns most affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. But from tragedy emerged strength—the community rebuilt schools, homes, and sanctuaries, such as the Turtle Hatchery and Tsunami Museum, which today stand as powerful reminders of survival and hope.
